The Tip is 'Made In America Secrets'

We needed some new towels recently and I remembered coming across your website. I thought I would give it a quick search to see if there were any Made in America towels sold nearby. It just so happened that when I did the search, I found there was a nearby reseller listed who carried the particular Made in the USA towels I wanted. We bought the towels and, not surprisingly, they are both more absorbent and better looking than I thought.

Made in America Secrets has thousands of products made in America offered by hundreds of small manufacturers. These small companies are a big contributor to our economy.

According to one study small businesses (those employing 1 to 99 employees) comprise 98% of all the USA businesses. That's equivalent to 5.8 million businesses employing over 40 million people. Most American's are unaware of how significant small business is when compared to the total size of the US economy. This website is aware of it and that is why 99% of the businesses that advertise on Made in America Secrets are small businesses.

I now use this site to search for small companies especially since more than likely it is a small company that employs someone I know- my wife, my children, my friends.

Often times when searching for things made in America using search engines like Google, these small businesses never show up on page one of the results- and typically I never look past the first page. Therefore it's difficult for me to find them. Made in America Secrets was conceived to provide a solution to that reality. As an example search for shoes using Google and you will likely miss many of the companies that make this country great- the small business owner. Use this website for your Made in USA product searches and you'll likely find a hidden jewel.

A New England Tradition Continues...

For more than 150 years the Peterboro Basket Company has thrived in the heart of historic Peterborough, New Hampshire, in the serene shadow of Mt. Monadnock, surrounded by four seasons of the worlds most exquisite natural beauty.

The history of the Peterboro Basket Company dates back to 1841 when Amzi Childs came to Peterborough from Deerfield, Mass., to work on the manufacture of lead pipe. In 1854 he began weaving baskets in a building erected by Moses Chapman in 1830 as a wheelwright shop between Depot Street and the railroad tracks. Amzi Childs and Asa Henry made baskets for many years and had an excellent reputation. Their business burned in 1891. The business was sold to the McLane Basket Factory of Milford and moved there.

Henry B. Needham, the dean of the basket manufacturing business in Peterborough, came to town in 1875 and for 15 years was foreman at the Childs' factory. After that factory burned in 1891, Needham established the Needham Basket Factory in a part of the White Machine Shop at Elm and Water streets. He constructed a new building in 1893. In 1916 the H. B. Needham Basket Company incorporated and purchased the shoe factory near the depot. In 1920 the Peterborough company was organized to build a new factory and combined with the Milford company. In 1926 the building was damaged by fire and the present Peterboro Basket Co. organized.

Walter Hood, now semi-retired, has worked at the Peterboro Basket Company since 1962. In April, 2000, Hood will have 50 years of basket making to his credit. He is quite the celebrity. I like making baskets. They're one of the oldest creations of man. They date to before my time. I love my work, Hood said.

The rugged natural beauty of Peterboro has inspired Yankee artists like Thorton Wilder, the writers of Yankee Magazine, and the crafters of Peterboro Basket. More than a business, Peterboro Basket is a Yankee tradition. Although it has become an industry leader, this family owned and operated company has never forgotten the quiet, careful attention to detail with which Amzi Childs wove that first basket 150 years ago.
