My recent trip to Tanzania in May 2012 will prove to be the most important trip of my career. I have made friends with one of the mine owners in D block, considered to be the source of the finest tanzanites. At first look at his material I recognized the tri-croic colors that I used to see 15 years ago when large quantities of D block material was available. The most notable characteristic is the purity of the yellow portion of the tri-croism, no green at all which will give the finished gems a purer violet blue as when these are heat treated all of the yellow will disappear, whereas those with green in the tri-croism will retain traces of undesirable green in the finished heat treated gems.
