The Tip is 'Don't procrastinate' For years I've been buying ink jet cartridges from a big box office supply store. These cartridges were made overseas and labeled with the well-known brand of a large American printer company. One I remembered a local store that advertised quality cartridges. I had traveled by this local store hundreds of times but never stopped. This time I stopped at the local store. To my surprise I discovered that they carried the cartridge I needed and it was a Made in USA cartridge. Made in Chicago, to be precise, and it was half the price of the imported ones I had been buying for years. The quality is exceptional and they last longer too. Who knew? After that experience, I make a point to stop at every store I can. By doing so, I've been finding more and more Made in America products. Occasionally the clerks don't know the country of origin; this can be discouraging but finding the origin information yourself isn't difficult I've come to realize. Believe it not, there are actually a number of computers made in the US including laptops made in the USA. When the label is not visibly displayed I use the other Made in America buying tips to help me find Made in US. If the store doesn't carry what you are looking for, use Made in America Secrets to find it and tell the manager about your experience at their store. If enough people are asking for Made in America products stores will begin to carry them. The 2013 International Die-Casting Design Competition has named the Williams Outdoor VA2 architectural LED area light as the winner in the category of Aluminum Die Casting Over 10 lb. This year's winning castings exemplify the continued advancement in die casting capabilities, said NADCA President Daniel Twarog. There are advances not only in geometric complexity, quality, and cost savings, but in structural applications as well. Williams' team of LED engineers worked closely with Microcast Technologies to develop a housing that met all the challenges of LED outdoor area lighting. LED lighting systems create a great amount of heat, so cooling is essential. By die casting the complete housing in a two-piece assembly, combining all of the LED mounting, internal heatsink finning, access and maintenance features in a single set of parts, the resulting unit lowers the system cost and provides long maintenance-free operation. Categories in the competition are grouped by material and include aluminum, magnesium, zinc and other alloy families. Castings are judged within each category on four equally weighted criteria: ingenuity of casting and/or product design, overall quality, cost savings as compared to other manufacturing processes and the part's contribution to expanding the market for die castings. A panel of independent judges with no ties to eligible casters, selects the winners. NADCA will honor this year's award winners at its 2013 Die Casting Design Competition Luncheon on Monday, September 16th during the Die Casting Congress & Tabletop programming in Louisville, KY. Williams New Voltaire LED Area Lights Blend Style and Performance for Outdoor Applications September 12, 2013 (Carthage, Missouri) ? After years of careful research and development, Williams Outdoor introduces its Voltaire series of LED area lights, which blend architectural design with Williams' legendary performance. The VA Series area lights are available in packages delivering 6,000 to 24,000 lumens, and 90? factory-set optics make it easy to direct 100 percent of available lumen output to specified targets. In addition, all VA Series outdoor products are approved for the DesignLights Consortium (DLC) qualified product list, which recognizes only high quality and high efficiency LED products for commercial applications. All VA area lights are housed in a hinged, two-piece cast aluminum enclosure, which provides for easy installation and long-term durability. That combined with the predicted long life of LED technology makes the VA Series a great option for busy or hard-to-reach outdoor locations where recurring maintenance would be difficult.
