Mr. Stoll

You may have heard that necessity is the mother of invention. In the case of Stoll Fireplace Equipment, it started a business. That business today employs many people, and from its Abbeville County base has a marketing area that encompasses the United States and Canada. But it all began 40 years ago when Mr. Bill Stoll moved to Abbeville County from Virginia. He soon found that the fireplace in his new home was too large for any of the standard-sized fireplace screens that were typically available. So Bill made a screen to fit—he estimates that the screen was 48 by 30 inches. Bill recalled that the response to his screen was entirely unexpected.“I didn’t have any idea I’d be making fireplace screens for a living,” he said. But when his neighbors began asking him to make fireplace equipment for them, he did, and soon a business was born. Today, two of Mr. Stoll's sons—Dennis and Robert—own the business which has grown steadily over the years. Stoll Fireplace Inc. makes a wide range of hearth products and fireplace accessories. Many of the products are still custom made by skilled craftsmen for our customer's individual fireplaces.

Mr. William F. Stoll, Sr., founder of Stoll Fireplace, Inc. passed on to his eternal reward on November 2, 2008. Mr. Stoll was 94 years old, and is survived by Katie, his wife of 67 years.

Mr. Stoll lived a full life, centered around serving others. He remained active throughout his life, and could be seen here at the plant or on errands for Stoll Fireplace up until the last couple months. His smiling face and genuine care for people will be greatly missed. We are all very sad to see him go, but we know he was ready to leave this earth. He lived a long, good, life here, and was looking forward to the time he could trade his earthly body for a heavenly one.

What does Made in USA mean?
There is no law requiring most products to be labeled Made In USA, or have any other disclosure about the amount of U.S. content. However, for job creation purposes (see our Big Secret tab), if you have a choice between an imported product and one with no country of origin on its label, choose the product without a country of origin over the imported one. This is true because the product without the country origin on its label has at least some American labor in its content and the imported one most likely does not.

Note: Imported products are required by law to country of origin on their label and products partially Made In USA do not. To answer this question completely reviewing our Labeling Tips 1, 2 & 3. These tips are accessible from scrolling to the bottom of our home page clicking Browse All Tips button.
